Weather is keeping whoopers in Georgia

By Times Staff Writer
Published December 10, 2005

Wind again kept the whooping cranes grounded in Terrell County, Ga., Thursday and Friday.

The 19 chicks were being led to a winter habitat in Central Florida behind ultralight aircraft. They could be two or three days from landing at their temporary winter site in Marion County if they get several good flying days in a row. A flyover for the public is expected to take place at the Dunnellon Airport early on the morning the cranes arrive. For information, try the migration hotline at 904 232-2580, ext. 124, or the Operation Migration Web site at http://www.operationmigration.org/Field_Journal.html
