Brandon man killed in Iraq

TAMPA - A soldier from Brandon died Thursday in Baghdad.

Army 1st Lt. Kevin J. Smith, 28, of Brandon died after an improvised explosive device detonated near his humvee, according to the Department of Defense.

Smith was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division in Fort Stewart, Ga.

The Defense Department released word of Smith's death Friday.

As of Thursday morning, the agency counted 2,138 U.S. casualties from the current war in Iraq.
