THUMBS UP
The Seminoles. Go ahead and admit it: You wrote them off. Well, they ain't quite back on the national scene but their win over Virginia Tech Dec. 3 showed why they're not exactly ready for that toe tag either.
THUMBS DOWN
Ousted Colorado football coach Gary Barnett, who even after losing to Texas 70-3 in the Big 12 Championship Game called his stay in Boulder "a success." His winning percentage with CU: 56. Who consulted this guy, Ron Zook or Doug Dickey?
VOICES CARRY
"If you started running the Lions tomorrow, what would you do? I can't speak for everybody here, which is my way of saying I'm about to speak for everybody here. I think most of us would try to build a solid foundation to replace the current one, which is made of tinfoil. We'd probably look for an up-and-coming coach. And find a new quarterback of the future to compete with rookie Dan Orlovsky, and a new quarterback of the present to replace the Jeff Garcia/Joey Harrington duet. In other words, we'd start over. That doesn't mean get rid of everybody on the roster; obviously, there are some keepers. But nobody would be untouchable. I bring this up for two reasons. One, the Fords (the family that owns the team) probably think you're qualified to be the Lions' president, and they might just offer you the job if Matt Millen is whisked away by martians. And two, if Millen is not whisked away by martians (sorry, but it's unlikely), he has a choice. He can face reality and make long-term decisions. Or he can look for short-term solutions.

PREPARE YOUR EMMY SPEECH?
Did you see where former Monday Night Football sideline reporter Lisa Guerrero is posing for Playboy? This is the least surprising move since the last time sports agent Drew Rosenhaus blamed the media for one of his client's "problems." Apparently, she's also working on a reality TV show about her life as a sports reporter (I'm sorry, my stomach hurts when I have to say that) turned baseball wife (she's married to Scott Erickson). And you thought Cop Rock and Full House were bad. Sheesh.
LAST WORD
"You can take the BCS and shove it, as far as I am concerned."
- Penn State coach Joe Paterno
