No matter how you pronounce it, it's cutting-edge

It wouldn't be a stretch to think that Verizon used FiOS to describe its new TV service because it's a fiber optic system. But it would be an incorrect assumption.
FiOS is a brand name that doesn't stand for anything, says Terry Denson, Verizon's vice president for programming and marketing.
But even as a brand, the question arises: How do you pronounce it? Before a news conference last week when Verizon announced the service startup in Temple Terrace, Alan Ciamporcero, the Southeast region president, was overheard giving some visitors a tutorial.
"FI-ose" is correct, Ciamporcero said, not "fee-ose."

Ken Halloway, vice mayor of Temple Terrace, trying to compliment Verizon for its installation of a fiber optic network in the city, but drawing laughter at the FiOS TV rollout because of the company's problems elsewhere.
