Hunting knife in truck leads to arrest

By Times Staff

INVERNESS - A man was arrested Monday, accused of possessing a knife in a city park that is within 1,000 feet of school property.

Johnathan Wesley Taylor, 18, of 511 S Jackson St., Beverly Hills, was arrested just after noon when a search of his truck, which was parked at Bryant Park off Tuttle Street in Inverness, turned up a hunting knife with an 8-inch blade. He gave deputies permission to search the truck after he was stopped for throwing an alcoholic beverage bottle out the window.

Florida law prohibits possession of a weapon, such as a knife, on or within 1,000 feet of school property during school hours except as authorized in support of school-sanctioned activities. The park is near the Withlacoochee Technical Institute. Violation of the law is a third-degree felony.

Taylor remained at the Citrus County jail on Monday, where bail was set at $2,250.
