Woman killed crossing U.S. Highway 301

SUN CITY CENTER - A Sun City Center resident died Tuesday morning after a semitrailer truck hit her as she was crossing U.S. Highway 301 S on her way from church.

Diana M. Russ, 70, of 203 Alanhurst Way in Sun City Center, was leaving Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church near State Road 674 when she walked across the highway toward the parking lot where she'd parked her golf cart, said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Trooper Larry Coggins.

Russ entered the path of a 2000 Freightliner traveling south. Though driver Efrain Perez, 36, of 9301 54th St. N in Pinellas Park, tried to avoid Russ by steering right, his trailer knocked her to the ground. Russ died at the scene as a result of her injuries. The accident occurred at 9:40 a.m.

Coggins said no charges are expected.
