City trash collection fee goes up 45 cents per month

SEMINOLE - The cost of trash collection service within Seminole city limits increased approximately 4.7 percent this month, the first increase since 2003.

The residential rate (formerly $9.50 per month) increased to $9.95 per month or $29.85 per quarter. Commercial customers also will see a similar increase.

The increase is based on consumer price index information provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics and is permitted in accordance with the city's agreement with Waste Management. For more information, call the city at 391-0204 or Waste Management at 572-8779.

The Seminole Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Chamber Open House from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the chamber office, 8400 113th St. N. The event will feature a cookout with chefs from Firefighters Local 2896.

At 7:30 a.m. Thursday, the chamber will host a holiday breakfast with Santa at Banquet Masters, 8100 Park Blvd. Cost of the breakfast is $12. For more information, call the chamber at 392-3245.

The Christmas Archery Tournament, sponsored by the Seminole recreation department, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The tournament offers divisions for two age groups: kids age 7 to 10 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; kids 10 to 14 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Entry fees are $5 for children with a recreation card and $10 for nonmembers. Each contestant will be given 30 arrows to shoot for total points. Bows will be available, if needed. Trophies will be given to the top two winners in each group. For information, call 391-8345.

Registration for the fourth annual youth basketball season at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N, will begin Jan. 2 for boys and girls born in 1991 to 1996.

Youth basketball season will run from February through May. Registration fee is $70 per child. A noncompetitive instruction basketball program for children born from 1997 to 1998 also is available at a cost of $40 per child. A recreation membership card is required for both programs.

The basketball program also is looking for volunteer coaches with past playing experience and/or a working knowledge of the sport.

Parents of registered children will be given a discount if they are selected as a team coach.

A Christmas in the City luncheon will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Seminole recreation department, 9100 113th St N. The cost of the luncheon is $7 per person (recreation card is not required), and reservations must be made by Saturday. The meal will include ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas, salad, rolls, dessert, and beverage. The Florida Beach Girls Dance Company will provide entertainment. Following the luncheon, the movie matinee will feature White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. For more information, call 391-8345.

The Country Snowbirds perform from 1 to 4 p.m at Seminole City Park on Fridays until April. The band has been entertaining for 11 years, playing an open jam session hosted by Bernie Brown. A Christmas lights tour of Pinellas County will be offered by the Seminole recreation department from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., next Wednesday. The cost for the "Delight with Lights Tour" is $15 per person or $25 per couple and includes bus transportation. A recreation card is required. For more information, call 391-8345.

Pinellas County Sunstar Emergency Medical Services will offer a free three-hour CPR class from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
