  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Forums set to detail charter high school

Those applying for the program that results in a high school diploma and an associate's degree must attend one of the forums.

Students interested in attending St. Petersburg Collegiate High School in August are invited to learn more about the district's only charter high school at a series of public forums.

Attendance at one of the forums is required for current ninth-, 10th- and 11th-graders who plan to apply during the Jan. 1-March 1 application period.

The collegiate high school, a collaborative effort between the Pinellas County School District and St. Petersburg College, opened in August 2004 on SPC's Gibbs campus. It allows students to earn a standard diploma and a cost-free two-year associate's degree in the time it would take to graduate from high school.

Incoming 10th-graders attend high school classes in a "super portable," while 11th- and 12th-graders earn high school and college credit taking college classes with SPC students.

The school had twice as many potential students as seats in its first application period last spring. With few exceptions, the 150 students selected in a random lottery accepted seats for the charter school's inaugural year.

Principal Linda Benware expects students will be selected in a lottery again this year.

Students considering St. Petersburg Collegiate High School must be residents of Pinellas County who are entering grades 10 or 11. Tenth-graders entering should have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and passing scores on the eighth grade Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

Students entering as 11th-graders must have a minimum 3.0 unweighted high school grade point average.

The parent and student orientation meetings will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. on these dates:

Jan. 18 in the Florida Room at the St. Petersburg College Allstate Center, 3200 34th St. S, St. Petersburg

Feb. 1 in the arts auditorium on the Clearwater campus of St. Petersburg College, 2465 Drew St.

Feb. 15 in the music center of the Gibbs campus of St. Petersburg College, 6605 Fifth Ave. N

Families will receive more information about the application and acceptance process at the meetings. See www.spcollege.edu/spchs for additional details.
