Trainer quickly gathers shoes

ST. PETERSBURG - Some youngsters in a national fitness program are getting free running shoes, thanks to the quick work of a health studio co-owner.

Andre Hudson, who also is a personal trainer at the center, Renaissance Health and Fitness in Tierra Verde, called clients and contacted Sports Authority headquarters to arrange 25 pairs of Nikes for Academy Prep students.

The youngsters are taking part in a program that originated with the New York Road Runners Foundation. It targets underserved elementary school-age children, encouraging them to become active and fit.

Beach Charities, which owns the annual St. Pete Beach Classic footraces, is in charge of the program here.

Hudson said it took him about 90 minutes to make the arrangements. He said his clients contributed money and Sports Authority approved a discount.

"My whole deal here is relationship with clients. They drop a dime for me, man, whatever, if I ask for it. These people are very supportive," Hudson said.

Hudson, 34, also said he is a believer in running as a fitness tool, a philosophy he acquired while serving in the Army and working as a lifeguard.

The running regime, which began about two months ago, is doing well, said Mary Ann Renfrow, youth program director.

"Academy Prep in particular has just inspired me so much. The kids have done so much. They're very dedicated to it," Renfrow said. The youngsters run under the supervision of a coach every Friday and will add a second weekday of running next month, she said.

Gulf Beaches Elementary School also is a participant. Other Pinellas County schools may be added next year, Renfrow said.
