Clearwater Jazz needs ideas for 2006 poster

CLEARWATER - The organizers of the Clearwater Jazz Holiday are seeking designs for the event's 2006 poster.
Artwork can be produced digitally, photographically or by using traditional artistic media. The poster can be horizontal or vertical and must include blank space that does not interfere with the design for sponsor logos, the lineup and other text.

The deadline is Jan. 6. Several artists will be selected by Jan. 27 and will receive $200 to cover the cost of further developing their ideas. Organizers will select a final design by Feb. 24. The winner will receive $2,000 along with other recognition.

Jazz band seeks young musicians for open spots

Police departments seeking Christmas toys
CLEARWATER - The Police Department is seeking donations for its annual toy drive. Since 1959, the Clearwater police Officer Friendly Christmas Cheer program has collected toys for needy children and their families.
Anyone interested in donating is asked to bring money or new toys to police headquarters at 645 Pierce St. or call 562-4144 for pickup. The deadline is Dec. 16.'
TARPON SPRINGS:The Tarpon Springs Police Cops and Kids program is conducting its annual Christmas toy drive, which has provided gifts to more than 200 children from low-income families each year since 1991.
Department volunteers try to match donated toys to each child's letter to Santa. Individuals, civic groups and businesses donate new, unwrapped gifts for infants through teens, and some donate cash to help meet specific requests. The Cops and Kids program does not solicit by telephone.

Hang a free tree ornament in honor of lost loved ones
Throughout the month of December, Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park & Funeral Home invites the public to place an ornament in memory of their loved ones on its Memorial Tree in the lobby of the funeral home, 2853 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater. The ornaments are free and can be personalized with a name and message. Call 796-1992.
Clothes to Kids charity in need of donations
CLEARWATER - As the weather cools, the Clothes to Kids charity finds itself in need of jackets and other warm clothes for Pinellas County schoolchildren from poor families.
Donations of clothes to the nonprofit organization are down, although administrators estimate they will serve 600 kids during December, and many of the items that Clothes to Kids provides will be used by parents as Christmas gifts for their children.
Last year, Clothes to Kids provided clothes for more than 3,300 children; this year, it expects to serve 4,600. It recently opened a 5,000-square-foot store at 1059 N Hercules Ave.
A $20 donation will buy a jacket; $35 will buy a child a week's worth of clothes.
The organization also needs boys' long pants sizes 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12; girls' long pants sizes 12, 14 and 16; juniors' long pants sizes 5, 7, 9 and 11; and young men's long pants sizes 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 and 28.

Free tours of Plumb House are available this month
The Historic Plumb House, 1380 S Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. in Clearwater, will have free tours from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the first and third Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday in December except Dec. 24 and 31. The house is the birthplace of Clearwater's first public school teacher, for whom Plumb Elementary is named. It is an original, Cracker-style house built in 1896. Call 399-1412, 446-4250 or 446-2676.
Dunedin club for children meets to explore nature
The Investigators of Nature kids club meets from 4 to 5 p.m. Mondays. The club for children ages 6 to 12 explores nature through hikes and hands-on projects. Cost is $1 with Dunedin rec card, $2 without. Call (727) 298-3271.
Firefighters collecting food basket donations
TARPON SPRINGS - Firefighters are collecting nonperishable food and cash to provide food baskets for people in the city who may need some extra help during the holidays.
Firefighters have two dropoff locations: the front lobby of City Hall, 324 E Pine St., and the lobby of the Public Safety Facility at 444 S Huey Ave. Monetary donations should be mailed to or dropped off at Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue, 444 S Huey Ave., Tarpon Springs, FL 34689.

Alumni chapter formed for SPC nursing school
St. Petersburg College has formed a nursing alumni chapter so graduates of its nursing program can keep in touch with friends and maintain their ties to the institution.
Meetings are the first Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. at the Caruth Health Education Center, 7200 66th St. N in Pinellas Park. All St. Petersburg College nursing alumni are welcome.

A good use for those books you no longer read
The Friends of the Library Book & Gift Store at Clearwater Main Library is seeking donations of current fiction and nonfiction hardcover and paperback books in good condition, as well as classics and collectibles, for resale in the store. Donations not used in the store will be part of the semiannual book sale.
Bring donations to the main library at 100 N Osceola Ave. or call Rita Garvey, 446-3845, for pickup. Proceeds from the bookstores go to the Friends of the Library to enhance the Clearwater Public Library system.
LIADO wrapping gifts for charity at Barnes & Noble
LIADO, the Italian-American Women of Today, will wrap holiday purchases from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily through Dec. 24 at Barnes & Noble Bookstore, 23654 U.S. 19 N, Clearwater.
Proceeds will go to St. Joseph's Children's Cancer Research Group, Kimberly Home Infant Care Center and the LIADO Scholarship Program as well as other local charities. Donations will be accepted. Call Barbara Abela at 443-5414 or 418-5414.
