Wine of the Week

Carmenere, Santa Carolina Barrica Selection 2002

By CHRIS SHERMAN
Published December 14, 2005

Carmenere vines once grew so widely in France that the grape was considered the sixth of the great red Bordeaux blends.

In the last century, however, Europe forgot about carmenere while Chileans tended transplanted vines carefully and made it Chile's great distinction.

Smart move, as this special bottle from Santa Carolina shows. This red is full of raspberries and cinnamon and spice in the nose, and fills the mouth softly. Yet for all its substance and spice, its tannins are round, the texture pure silk trailing off in a long finish. Hard to find so much taste in wine so easy to drink.

Bordeaux's loss is the smart shopper's gain.

Price: $12, available in liquor stores and wine shops.
