Stage

Black Nativity returns with power

By Times Staff Writer
Published December 15, 2005

Langston Hughes' Black Nativity, a production of the Mahaffey Theater Foundation, played to packed houses at St. Petersburg's Palladium Theater last year with its cast of local singers and dancers. Cristina Perez, shown here, played Mary.

The gospel play returns this weekend with three free performances and adds an American Sign Language interpreter for the Sunday afternoon show.

Sharon Scott reprises her role as the lead singer. Last year, St. Petersburg Times reviewer Colette Bancroft wrote that Scott "ruled the stage with her warm, commanding presence and powerhouse voice. During her mighty solo rendition of Mary Did You Know, the audience couldn't wait until she finished, giving her two rounds of applause during the song and a standing ovation at the end."

Tickets are free and available through the Palladium box office. Even when all the free tickets have been distributed, organizers expect to have seats for some walk-up patrons. Some seats for Sunday are being reserved for deaf patrons. Contact the box office for details.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Palladium Theater, 253 Fifth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. 727 822-3590; www.mypalladium.org
