Opening Wednesday: Comedy multiplied by two

By STEVE PERSALL
Published December 15, 2005

Steve Martin and Jim Carrey are back in funny business for the holidays with a sequel and a remake, more evidence that movie audiences will laugh at the same jokes twice.

Martin reprises his beleaguered dad persona in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (PG), furthering the misadventures of the Baker family that charmed audiences in 2003. Bonnie Hunt returns as his wife and co-herder of 12 children, including Hilary Duff and Piper Perabo. This time, the Bakers are goaded into competition against the wealthy Murtaugh family. Eugene Levy co-stars as a conspicuous consumer, with Carmen Electra as his trophy wife.

Carrey toplines a PG-13 remake of the 1977 comedy Fun With Dick and Jane, which starred George Segal and Jane Fonda as suburbanites using crime to beat inflation. This time, Tea Leoni co-stars as Carrey's willing accomplice.
