Current movies recommended by the Times:
1. King Kong - Peter Jackson follows his Lord of the Rings trilogy the only way possible: remaking a screen classic with utmost respect and relentless brilliance.
2. Rent - Jonathan Larson's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning play reaches the screen with six original cast members and a dynamic musical debut by Rosario Dawson.
3. Good Night, and Good Luck - CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) challenges the communist-hunting practices of Sen. Joseph McCarthy in George Clooney's gorgeous, thoughtful film.
4. Paradise Now - Two Palestinians prepare for a suicide bombing in Hany Abu-Assad's engrossing political thriller.
5. The Family Stone - A fine ensemble cast and smart screenwriting by director Thomas Bezucha turn sitcom situations into the feel-good weeper of the holiday season.
