NORTHEAST MACFARLANE - On Tuesday, the Hillsborough School Board appointed Denyse Riveiro as principal at MacFarlane Park Elementary Magnet for International Studies, 1721 N MacDill Ave., effective Jan. 2. She replaces principal Susan Turner, who retires today.

Riveiro comes from Lee Academy of World Studies, where she was assistant principal for the past five years.

Riveiro had been a marketing representative for Stewart Title Co. in Tampa for 10 years before entering education. She first taught kindergarten and fourth grade at Yates Elementary School in Brandon. From there, she became an administrator at Rampello Downtown Partnership.

Riveiro holds a master's and doctorate degree in education and leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She is married to Daniel Riveiro, former principal at Jefferson High School and Dowdell Middle Magnet School.

She has a son and a daughter. She says she bases her priorities on what is best for children.

Head Start wing planned at Sulphur Springs school

SULPHUR SPRINGS - Sulphur Springs Elementary School is gaining some learning space.

A groundbreaking ceremony for a new wing at the 1926 school building at 8412 N 13th St. was scheduled Thursday.

The federally funded Head Start program will pay $625,000 for the construction.

The Hillsborough district supplied the land and will pay for utilities and custodial services.

The new section will house four Head Start classrooms for 3- and 4-year-old students, a teacher work station, a parent conference or break room, staff rooms and a covered outdoor play space.

Completion is set for March. Head Start classes will move from portables currently at the school.
