Notebook: Denise Moore to perform at Friday Night Jazz

OLD HYDE PARK - This month's Friday Night Jazz Series begins at 6 p.m. today in Old Hyde Park Village.

Local jazz artist Denise Moore will perform in the main fountain area. Event is free. Wine sales will benefit Lowry Park Zoo.

The concert series is held the third Friday of each month from November through April. For information, go to www.oldhydeparkvillage.com or call 251-3500.

Lightning foundation to host family festival

CHANNEL DISTRICT - The Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation hosts a Reindeer Run and Family Holiday Festival beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Participants can run or walk the 1-mile or 5K course.

After the race, families can enjoy entertainment from local schools, games, and arts and crafts. Those who bring an unwrapped toy to the event will receive a Lightning stocking stuffed with holiday surprises.

Proceeds will benefit local epilepsy organizations and the Hillsborough County School District. For information, call 301-6590.

Sugar Plum Fairy will appear at Christmas Stroll

DOWNTOWN - The Sugar Plum Fairy from Orlando Ballet's The Nutcracker will visit the Victorian Christmas Stroll at the Henry B. Plant Museum, 401 W Kennedy Blvd.

Guests may take pictures with the fairy from 10 a.m. to noon Monday. Bring a camera.

The Victorian Christmas Stroll is an annual event with soloists and ensembles. The event runs daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Dec. 23. Admission is $9 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger.

Admission rates are reduced to $5 and $2 Monday for family day, and $5 Tuesday for senior day. Proceeds will benefit museum restoration and preservation projects. For information, call 254-1891.

South Tampa writer to talk about his novel

TAMPA - South Tampa author A.H. Felman will discuss his book Legend of the Feather Pillow at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Barnes & Noble, 11802 N Dale Mabry Highway, Carrollwood. The author of two medical books and numerous scientific articles, Felman's latest novel draws on 40 years of practicing medicine to present a story of everyday compromises and the ethical dilemmas they present.

Event honors University of Tampa art students

DOWNTOWN - A reception honoring graduating art students from the University of Tampa begins at 7 p.m. today at the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery.

The students' work is on exhibit through Saturday. Artwork includes drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography, computer graphics, animation and mixed media.

The gallery is on the UT campus in the RK Bailey Art Studio, 301 N Boulevard. Call 253-6217.

Class teaches techniques to help reduce stress

NORTH HYDE PARK - Stressed out? Try Steve Shealy and Lena Koob-Emunds' class, An Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.

The workshop incorporates body scanning, mindful hatha yoga and meditation to reduce physical, emotional and psychological stress.

The free class begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Donations will be accepted.

Participants are encouraged to bring a sitting cushion or a firm pillow and a sitting pad. Yoga mats and blankets will be available, and loose clothing is advised. To register, go to www.bemindful.org or call 989-9910.

Ronald McDonald House requesting donations

TAMPA - The Ronald McDonald House of Tampa Bay is seeking donations to offset costs for families of hospitalized children.

For each gift of $50 or more, donors to Light a Light & Share a Night will receive a brass collector's ornament and bookmark commemorating the 25th anniversary of the local Ronald McDonald House.

Area Dillard's stores are also helping the house by selling a holiday CD, This Christmas, Dillard's Brings You . . . Broadway, featuring hits from 12 of Broadway's most popular shows. The CD costs $7.

Saturday commencement to honor three residents

DOWNTOWN - Three local residents will be honored at the University of Tampa's winter commencement at 1 p.m. Saturday on Plant Hall's East Verandah.

Tiffany Nemoy tops the graduating class of more than 450 with summa cum laude recognition.

With a double major in computer information systems and mathematical programming, Nemoy earned her degrees while working full time. She is graduating with honors distinction and received the Spartan Award for leadership.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays chairman Vincent Naimoli and Thomas Financial Group founder/chief executive officer Rick Thomas will receive the Champion of Higher Independent Education in Florida award at Saturday's commencement.

The CHIEF award is the highest honor presented by the President's Council of Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida and is bestowed on individuals who represent the greatest support of independent higher education in the state.

Because of their involvement with the university, both Naimoli and Thomas have facilities on the UT campus named in their honor.
