BASS FISHING
TOURNAMENTS: The inaugural ESPN Outdoors Bassmaster Series National Championship will be held Jan. 19-21 on East Lake Tohopekaliga in Kissimmee. The champion of the tournament captures the last berth in the 2006 Bassmaster Classic on Feb. 24-26, also on Lake Toho. The top 10 boaters and non-boaters qualify for the Bassmaster Classic, the series' top tournament, by results in five region tournaments. In all, 50 boaters and non-boaters will participate in the national event. The champion boater earns $100,000, and the top non-boater earns $50,000. Call 407 566-2208 or see www.bassmaster.com
ENVIRONMENT
BOCA GRANDE CLEAN-UP: The dates have been set for the 2006 Boca Grande Clean-up project. The fifth annual event takes place March 20-21 at Boca Grande Pass. Experienced divers are encouraged to volunteer for the project, which removes monofilament line, crab traps, anchors, ropes, fishing rigs and other trash. NEW WEB SITE: Thanks to the University of South Florida's Center for Community Design and Research, the Tampa Bay Estuary Program has a new Web site that has up-to-date information about Tampa Bay. The site, tampabay.wateratlas.org,
allows users to find out about water quality, sea grass recovery, air quality, stream flows, beach closures and other important barometers of bay health.
BOATING
HOLIDAY PARADES: Madeira Beach, Tampa and Inverness have holiday boat parades Saturday, and Indian Shores is holding its parade Sunday. The Madeira Beach parade starts just after sundown and runs along the gulf side of the beach. For prime viewing spots call (727) 391-9951. Tampa's parade starts at 6:30 p.m. and runs along Channelside after departing from Davis Island Yacht Club. The Inverness parade begins at 6 p.m. at Wallace Brooks Park on Lake Henderson. The Indian Shores parade begins at 6 p.m. and is held in conjunction with North Redington Beach, Redington Beach and Redington Shores.
PHOTOGRAPHY
NATURE IN FOCUS: Weedon Island Preserve is offering a free class on flora and fauna photography, taught by Donna Bollenbach, at 11 a.m. to noon Saturday. Bollenbach, a renowned nature photographer, will offer simple strategies on how to take interesting shots. She also will illustrate the use of line, shape, color and texture in photographs.
