DUI manslaughter charged in cyclist's death

TAMPA - A Seffner man whose car collided with a motorcycle in south Hillsborough last month has been charged with driving drunk and causing the motorcyclist's death.

Lamon Eugene Allen, 32, of 10809 E U.S. 92, Apt. 207, was booked into the county jail Wednesday evening on one count of driving under the influence manslaughter, a second-degree felony.

Sheriff's traffic homicide detectives say Allen was driving a 1997 Oldsmobile sedan west on State Road 60 near U.S. 301 at 10:35 p.m. on Nov. 4 when he turned left into the path of motorcyclist Leroy Anthony Mitchell, 48, of 3106 Summer House Drive in Valrico.

Mitchell tried to avoid a collision but slammed into the side of the car as he hit his brakes, authorities said. The impact ejected him from the 2004 Suzuki, and he hit the windshield of the Oldsmobile. He died at the scene.

A Breathalyzer test measured Allen's blood-alcohol level at 0.117 percent. Under Florida law, someone with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent or higher is presumed to be too impaired to drive.
