SEMINOLE - The Florida Senior Stars League of Seminole Lanes, Sunrise Lanes and Sunshine Bowl is celebrating its 20th year.
To commemorate the anniversary, the league is looking for all former members to join a banquet celebration on Dec. 30 at Seminole Lanes.
The final week of match play for the Stars starts at 9:30 a.m. and the banquet with food, drink, surprises and door prizes will start around noon.
With 20 years under its belt, the Stars league offers the most competitive senior play in the area, attracting some of the best competitors year in and year out. The executive committee is led by president Don Vaiuso, vice-president Chuck Matthews, secretary/treasurer Norb Treutel and sergeant at arms Len Rickard.
There also will be an end-of-the-season roll off and smaller pins over average tournament. Anyone interested in attending should call the center at (727) 392-2271.
COACHES LIST: With the help of the U.S. Bowling Coaching program, Bowlers Journal International magazine is conducting the second annual global search for the 100 top active coaches making significant contributions in the bowing community. The "100 Top Coaches" list will receive extensive exposure and will be the focus of a major article in BJI. A panel of judges will sort through the nomination forms and divide them by category. Three categories of coaches will be considered: youth coach, collegiate/high school coach, and bowling center/pro shop/professional coach.
Visit bowlersjournal.com to download the application form. Completed forms may be faxed to (312) 341-1469 or mailed to Bob Johnson, Bowlers Journal International, 122 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 1506, Chicago, IL 60603.
The deadline to submit completed forms, which can be used to nominate someone or apply for yourself, is Jan. 31. Only complete application forms will be accepted.
PBA: The Denny's PBA Tour concludes the first half of the 2005-06 season with the Empire State Classic at Spare Time-Clifton Park in New York.
If PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala) fails to win this week, it will mark the first calendar year he has been held without a Tour title since 1992. His last win came in the 2004 Uniroyal Tire Classic.
Norm Duke (Clermont) continues to lead the World Point Rankings and has six top-10 finishes in eight events this season. Tommy Jones is second with six top-10 finishes in seven events while Mike Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas), in the midst of a dream season with a career-high $126,000 in earnings, is third.
What a difference a year makes.
Four of the top six bowlers from the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings sit outside the top 20. Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas) must be thankful for the multi-season exemption he earned by winning the 62nd U.S. Open as a bad back has hampered his 2005-06 season.
Danny Wiseman (Baltimore), bowling with a broken left hand, finished third in points last season, but finds himself 46th on this season's list. NABI: Club 570 was at Seminole Lanes on Sunday where Bill O'Brien of Bradenton won the prize money of $335 by edging Palm Harbor's Paul Micallef 199-184 in the final.
Micallef averaged 177 and took home $110. St. Petersburg's Les Foerster won $20 in third place with a 170 average. Tampa's Mark Merrill and St. Petersburg's Cathy Worrall rounded out the money finishes with fourth and fifth, respectively.
Club 577 will be at AMF Bradenton, 4208 Cortez Rd., this Sunday. Squad times are at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The jackpot is at $290 and the strike-pot is $325.
