2006 folk fair to return to Vinoy Park

ST. PETERSBURG - The international folk fair, a fixture in Pinellas County for 30 years, will return to downtown's Vinoy Park in 2006, organizers say.

The St. Petersburg International Folk Fair Society plans to hold its 31st event March 22-26, said Kaiwa Miller, the organization's secretary.

As usual, the fair's first few days are for schoolchildren, with the general public's turn starting on March 24.

The fair has been held at several venues during the past few years. This year it returned to Tropicana Field after a year at Pinellas Park's Expo Center.

Most often, it has been at Bayfront Center, which is currently under construction.

But Vinoy Park was available.

"We thought it was time to take the fair back outdoors," Miller said.

She added that organizers will be "praying for no rain." Wet weather hurt attendance and receipts during a previous stint at the park in 1998.

The usual food, music and ethnic entertainment are on the 2006 agenda, Miller said. A beer garden will be open during the days the fair is open to the general public, she said.
