A leading figure in the long-delayed Tampa Bay 1 office/hotel/retail project has parted ways with the developer, the Bromley Group.
Josephine Vitale was the most prominent local executive in the $160-million project at Interstate 275 and N Dale Mabry Highway. She originally carried the title of managing director of Tampa Bay 1. A company Web site lists her as vice president/retail, condominium and hotel.
Vitale left about two months ago because of "a difference in management style," said Harry Costello of the public relations firm Hill & Knowlton in Tampa. A Bromley spokesman declined to discuss Vitale's departure.
Announced in 2000, Tampa Bay 1 was one of the most ambitious commercial projects in the Tampa Bay area. Plans called for two office towers, a four-star luxury hotel and specialty retail shops around a lushly landscaped "urban space."
But the project has mostly generated skepticism after missing numerous goals for breaking ground. Bromley spokesman Bob Leffler says chairman William Haines has the finances and patience to see the project through.
"He's got a prime piece of property," Leffler said. "He's not going to do just anything with it. He doesn't have to."
