Wal-Mart, eBay set pace in online holiday shipping

Heading into the home stretch of the holiday shopping season, traditional retailers are scrambling to make their numbers.

They won't post results until January, but Web site tracker Hitwise has identified the major online winners of the season, in shipments if not in dollar volume.

Internet sites that have done the best job of turning browsers into buyers this holiday season are Wal-Mart, Amazon and Apple Computer, according to an analysis of Web traffic patterns.

Hitwise traced traffic between retailers' sites and shipping company sites such as UPS, DHL and FedEx.

WalMart.com ranked first in traffic between its site and UPS, ahead of No. 2 eBay. On DHL, eBay and Amazon ranked first and second, respectively.

Online shopping is expected to grow 24 percent his holiday season over a year ago, said Kurt Peters, editor of Internet Retailer magazine.
