Judge faces charges

Pinellas Circuit Judge Brandt Downey could be removed if he is found guilty of viewing pornography and improper contact with attorneys.

The Judicial Qualifications Commission has filed formal charges against Pinellas Circuit Judge Brandt Downey, accusing him of habitually viewing pornography on his computer and having improper contact with female attorneys.

Downey, who announced Friday that he would retire in 2007, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Downey has 20 days to formally respond to the charges. Eventually, a six-person panel will recommend a punishment or a dismissal of the charges to the Florida Supreme decides that any of the charges have been proven, Downey faces anything from a fine to removal from office.
