LIADO wrapping gifts for charity at Barnes & Noble

LIADO, the Italian-American Women of Today, will wrap holiday purchases from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily through Dec. 24 at Barnes & Noble Bookstore, 23654 U.S. 19 N, Clearwater.

Proceeds will go to St. Joseph's Children's Cancer Research Group, Kimberly Home Infant Care Center and the LIADO Scholarship Program as well as other local charities. Donations will be accepted. Call Barbara Abela at 443-5414 or 418-5414.

Palm Harbor Literacy Council seeks volunteers

PALM HARBOR - The Palm Harbor Literacy Council seeks volunteers to help adults, many of them recent arrivals to the United States, learn to read, write and speak better English.

The literacy council provides free one-on-one tutoring to new residents, many of them foreign-born college graduates now working in the United States.

The council has 103 certified tutors but needs 50 more volunteers to work with students on its waiting list.

Firefighters collecting food basket donations

TARPON SPRINGS - Firefighters are collecting nonperishable food and cash to provide food baskets for people in the city who may need some extra help during the holidays.

Firefighters have two dropoff locations: the front lobby of City Hall, 324 E Pine St., and the lobby of the Public Safety Facility at 444 S Huey Ave. Monetary donations should be mailed to or dropped off at Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue, 444 S Huey Ave., Tarpon Springs, FL 34689.

Local families who need a food basket should call program coordinators at (727) 938-3737.
