INVERNESS - The School Board recently recognized Crystal River High School senior Holly Jean Van Sicklen, 18, for her selection as the Sunshine State Scholar for the Citrus County school district.
Selection is based on excellence in math and science, among other criteria. She will move on to the regional competition and, if selected there, will continue to compete for state scholar.
Holly is active in track and cross-country. She is a member of the Crystal River High National Honor Society.
When she graduates in May, Holly will have earned more than 50 college credits through advanced placement courses and Central Florida Community College classes. She earns A's in math and science and has taken mathematics through dual-enrollment (college) calculus. She plans to begin Calculus 2 in January.
In the sciences, Holly has completed Chemistry 1 and 2 and passed the chemistry advanced placement test. She is scheduled to take dual-enrollment biology in January.
Holly plans to attend the University of Florida to study nuclear engineering. She intends to get a master's degree in that area and hopes to attend Harvard University to study corporate law.
Holly is the daughter of Mark and Jean Van Sicklen of Crystal River.
