Survey shows manatees gathering in hot spots

By Times Staff Writer

Federal wildlife officers spotted 380 manatees during an aerial survey of the area's waterways Thursday.

The largest congregation of the endangered animals was in Kings Bay, where a total of 245, including 16 calves, were spotted. There were 24 manatees in the Progress Energy discharge canal, including two calves, and 111 manatees in the Homosassa Blue Waters, including five calves.

Manatees gather in warm water springs and other warm water sources in the cooler months to escape dropping temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico.
