  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Hot Tickets: And Phish bassist makes three

By PHILIP BOOTH
Published December 29, 2005

Phish may have split (or are just on hiatus again, according to their most optimistic fans), but the popular jam band's members continue to pop up with solo albums and one-off projects. Phish bassist Mike Gordon, whose recent CD Sixty Six Steps is his second collaboration with guitarist Leo Kottke, closes out the year with a string of shows with the Benevento/Russo Duo, including a concert Friday night at Jannus Landing.

The duo, with keyboardist Marco Benevento and drummer Joe Russo, plays a particularly intense brand of eclectic jams. Onstage at Java Junction in Clearwater earlier this year, the two dug into everything from psychedelic rock to punk funk to trippy techno; all those elements are also on display on the duo's Best Reason to Buy the Sun CD, released in April. Gordon should make a picture-perfect trio partner.

Mike Gordon and Benevento/Russo Duo, 8 p.m. Friday, Jannus Landing, 16 Second St. N., St. Petersburg. $19.75 advance, $25 day of show. Call (727) 896-1244 or go to jannuslandingconcerts.com.
