CRYSTAL RIVER - This year, there was no major celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Citrus County.
A new group called the African-American Ministers Alliance of Crystal River formed and promised to make sure 2006 would be different.
The group was true to its word.
The alliance and Omega Harvest Missions announced Thursday that they will sponsor a variety of events honoring the life of the late civil rights leader.
A community service is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church, 4221 W Gulf to Lake Highway (State Road 44) in Lecanto.
The first Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade will begin at 10 a.m. Jan. 16 at Crystal River Middle School, 344 NE Crystal St.
The parade will travel east on Crystal to Eighth Avenue and then south to Copeland Park on NW Third Street.
There will be a festival in the park after the parade.
"We're excited about being able to bring this to fruition," said Bishop Leonard T. Smith of the Fountain of Life Restoration Ministries. He is president of the alliance. "We were very concerned that there was no celebration in 2005, so we wanted to make sure there was going to be some type of recognition in our community" this year.
"We really appreciate all the support we've gotten from city officials, the Crystal River Police Department, Chief (Steven) Burch, and also the support we've gotten from the Sheriff's Office and throughout the community," Smith said. "I think everyone is excited about what's going to take place."
A list of parade regulations and registration forms are available at Fountain of Life, 713 NE Fifth St., Crystal River. Call 795-5775.
The registration form and disclaimer must be completed to participate. Mail completed forms to P.O. Box 2736, Crystal River, FL 34423. Registration deadline is Thursday.
For information, call 795-3895 or 795-5775.
