Briefs: Children's Chorus looks to add new voices to choirs

TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Children's Chorus is seeking new voices.

Auditions for boys and girls in grades 2 through 12 will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Patel Conservatory at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and from 4 to 8 p.m. Jan. 9 and 16 at St. Catherine's Episcopal Church, 502 Druid Hills Road in Temple Terrace.

This is the 17th season for the chorus, which has more than 100 children. In July, some of them traveled to Toronto to perform.

Second- through fifth-graders sing in the Children's Choir. Sixth- through 12th-graders sing in the Concert Choir and may be selected for the Chamber Choir.

The children's and concert choirs rehearse on Mondays at St. Catherine's Episcopal Church. The Children's Choir rehearses on Thursdays at the Patel Conservatory for the Arts at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.

Six Blake High students win awards in the arts

DOWNTOWN - Six Blake High School students won recognition through the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts competition.

They competed with more than 6,000 high school seniors nationally for the awards, which identify and encourage emerging talent.

Colette Earnest and Miranda Bailey won merit awards for poetry, and Alberto Luperon and Ailen Cruz won merit awards for short fiction. Christopher Blem was a finalist for a musical theater award and Halley Reed was a finalist for short fiction.

The two finalists will fly to Miami in January for an all-expenses-paid workshop in the arts.
