GREAT WAYS TO GREET 2006
New Year's Eve is Saturday, and there are lots of chances to welcome the new year with pizazz for families and partiers alike. Two of the biggest fetes: First Night St. Petersburg and New Year's Eve Party with the Barenaked Ladies. First Night includes art, music, dance and other entertainment throughout downtown after 5 p.m. and, for the first time, in the afternoon along 22nd Street S. Admission buttons are $8 advance, $10 at the gate for adults, $5 for ages 6 to 12. Fireworks are at 8:30 p.m. and midnight on the downtown waterfront. The Barenaked Ladies party starts at 8:30 p.m. at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. The band takes the stage at 10 and then hosts the countdown to the new year. LORDLY HIGH-STEPPING
Michael Flatley isn't dancing any more, but his Lord of the Dance remains popular. It is performed at 8 tonight and at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday in Morsani Hall at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Tampa. Tickets are $40 to $60. Cirque du Soleil's Varekai wraps up a monthlong run in St. Petersburg on Saturday.
