Canadian man dies of injuries from Dec. 10 crash into dental office

CLEARWATER - A 61-year-old Canadian man who lost control of his van and crashed into a dental office on Dec. 10 has died from his injuries, police said Thursday.

Joseph McCabe of Ontario was driving east on Druid Road about 2 p.m. when he apparently passed out from some existing medical problem, police Sgt. Greg Stewart said. McCabe's van smashed into a building at 2226 E Druid Road, which houses Clearwater Dental Associates, Stewart said. McCabe and his wife, Jesse, 72, were taken to Morton Plant Hospital with injuries that authorities did not consider to be life-threatening, Stewart said.

He died Tuesday, and the medical examiner concluded that his injuries led to his death, police said. His wife, who was discharged from the hospital Dec. 15, could not be reached. The dental building sustained minor damage, Dr. David Bassett said. "I would not have thought it was particularly serious," he said after learning of McCabe's death.
