CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS
The Homosassa River Garden Club recently visited the Butterfly Rainforest at the McGuire center of the University of Florida in Gainesville. They found the guided tour informative, educational and exciting as many of the butterflies fluttered nearby or landed on members. Enjoying the trip were Jackie Powell, Lottie Belovitz, Peggy Benson, Trudy Wittig, Gloria Peterson, Dekie Yelvington, Colleen Barton, Nancy Smith, Pat Francis and Doris White. They enjoyed the more than 2,000 butterflies in the three-story screened atrium filled with nectar and host plants, waterfalls and beautiful landscaping.

Elaine Moberley called the meeting of TOPS FL607 to order at 9 a.m. Dec. 21. The Pledge to the American flag and TOPS and KOPS pledges were recited.
Thirteen members and a guest, Peggy Driscoll, weighed in. Red strawberries, for a 1-pound weight loss, were awarded to: Elaine Moberley (1), Sue McClure (2) and Evelyn Blaisdell (6). Evelyn was the best loser of the week. Mid Reed and Linda Locey maintained their weight and each won a turtle.
Gold strawberries went to Anne Smith and Donna Gray for remaining a KOPS.
Caroline Pratt won tiki-tiki. There was no winner in the on-going card game. There was a short business meeting and members shared their plans for the Christmas holiday.
Thought for the day by Anne Smith was "No matter what our desires we know that love, joy, laughter and friends are free".
The meeting was adjourned to Bentley's for the Christmas luncheon.
TOPS FL607 meets every Wednesday at the Floral City Community building (beside the library). Weigh-in starts at 8 a.m. and the meeting starts at 9. For information, call Donna at 726-8666.

Toys For Tots ended Dec. 22 with a total of 13,962 toys collected and distributed throughout Citrus County. That is a record total. We had an amazing number of toys crop up in our final two weeks. We are fortunate to live in a generous county. We also picked up a significant number of new sponsors.
This year Central Florida Community College stepped up to the plate via the student union. Members of the CFCC Lecanto Student Union Toys For Tots collection drive were: Cynthia Lolley, president CFCC Student Union, Holli Bloom, Corrina Laporte, Tyler Waters, Lindsey Dergosits, Heather Jones, Kenneth Quinnell, Nathalie Hollis, Samantha Kisner, Melissa Harris, Steven Crosten, Kimberly Moore, Wade Duncan and Rick Kisner.

Wal-Mart Supercenter in Inverness recently presented a $500 matching grant to the Sheriff's Citizens' Academy Alumni Association.
Along with a previous grant, the Alumni Association partnered with former county resident and benefactor Anne Poniatowski in presenting an automatic external defibrillator to the Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office has a goal of installing an AED in every patrol car. A recent rescue saved a life using an AED.
On hand for the presentation were Lt. Doug Dodd, Sheriff's Citizens' Academy director; Bob Huscher, president of the Citizens' Academy Alumni; Larry Gamble, store manager and Gloria Quereux, store community coordinator.
Anyone who would like to donate to this project, call Sgt. Phil Royal at 726-4488.

Citrus County Parks and Recreation and instructor, Alice Heim, offer tatting classes Wednesdays and Saturdays beginning this month.
Wednesday classes are Jan. 18 through March 8. Saturday classes run from Jan. 21 through March 11. Both classes take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lecanto Community Building. The cost of the class is $60 for eight weeks and includes all supplies.
For those not familiar with tatting, it is needlework consisting of handmade lace made by looping and knotting a strong thread on a small hand shuttle. It is generally finer than crochet. Tatting is a fun way to make many craft projects and is a very portable needlecraft. The small shuttle fits in your pocket and is ready to use at any moment.
Heim has been teaching tatting for more than 30 years. She is a member of the Society of Craft Designers, a certified craft designer, member of the association of Crafts and Creative Industries Inc., and she was one of the founders of the Citrus County Craft Council in 1990.
For information or to register, call Citrus County Parks and Recreation at 527-7677.
