NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The only thing normal about Tennessee's victory over Notre Dame was the fact that the Vols won.
No. 1 Tennessee shot 33 percent from the field and was outscored in the second half but beat No. 12 Notre Dame 62-51 on Saturday.
Tennessee (12-0), which entered averaging 83 points, won by outrebounding the Irish 50-35 and holding Notre Dame to 31 percent shooting.
"Our philosophy has always been you better pack your defense and your board work on the road," Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said, "because those ugly nights and those poor shooting nights, you just have to grind games out. Today, we just had to grind it out."
Alexis Hornbuckle had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Vols. Megan Duffy led Notre Dame (9-2) with 19 points, eight in the last four minutes.
NO. 5 UNC 101, CHARLESTON 48: Ivory Latta had 14 points in 16 minutes, and the Tar Heels (13-0) made 9 of 20 3-pointers to win their 26th straight home game.
NO. 8 UCONN 85, ARMY 46: Ann Strother scored 21 and Barbara Turner had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and the host Huskies (11-1) made a season-high 12 3-pointers to win their fifth straight.
NO. 11 ARIZ. ST. 72, WASH. ST. 47: Briann January scored 12 and the host Sun Devils (12-1, 3-0 Pac-10) won their ninth straight, their longest streak in 10 years under coach Charlie Turner Thorne.
NO. 24 BC 73, COLGATE 54: Brooke Queenan had 23 points and Kindyll Dorsey scored 10 of her 16 in a 15-2 game-opening run as the host Eagles (12-2) gave coach Cathy Inglese her 350th career win.
State
SO. MISS 61, UCF 50: Ashely Boehnel scored 15 to lead four players in double figures for the visiting Golden Eagles (4-8) in the Conference USA opener for both.
