Tasers, pepper spray used in holiday arrests
Deputies used nonlethal force weapons, Tasers and pepper spray, to subdue two defendants in unrelated arrests over the weekend.

Matthew Thomas Dew, 22, of 2100 Stonebrook Drive, Homosassa, was stopped about midnight on New Year's Eve on U.S. 19 at Stonebrook Drive after driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to a report. After a sobriety test, he was arrested for DUI, but he struggled with deputies and hit one of them, according to the report. The deputy fired a Taser, which delivers an incapacitating electrical shock, to subdue him, according to the report.
After being arrested, Dew somehow got out of the back seat of a deputy's patrol car and started running. He was apprehended after he fell down, according to reports.
Dew was charged with escape, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and DUI. He was held at Citrus County jail on bail of $25,000.
About the same time, a few miles north at U.S. 19 and Turkey Oaks Drive in Crystal River, Thomas Bernand Emanuel of 3625 Berkshire St. in New Port Richey had a similar encounter. Emanuel was stopped after running a red light, according to reports. While being questioned, he reached under the seat of the car, prompting the two deputies to pull their guns, according to the arrest report.
Emanuel then got out of the car and tried to run away. After deputies caught up with him, they used a Taser and pepper spray to subdue him, according to the arrest report. The deputies also found a bag in his car with about 2 grams of cocaine and a bottle with 52 prescription pills, according to the arrest report.
He was charged with possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and drug possession and given a traffic citation. Emanuel was held in the jail on bail of $6,500.
On Friday, Crystal River police arrested a man in connection with a fight that took place earlier at Stingray's.
On Christmas Eve, the victim, Joshua Price, 30, of Homosassa, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital after being punched during the fight at Stingray's, according to police Chief Steven Burch. Price was later released from the hospital.
On Dec. 30, police Detective Sgt. Corey Sharpe identified Corey L. Jenkins 28, of Crystal River as the suspect. According to police, Sharpe's investigation revealed Jenkins had attacked Price's girlfriend. When Price said something about it, Jenkins punched him in the face, according to Burch's report. Jenkins was picked up by the Sheriff's Office and charged with battery. He and was released after posting bail.
