Sheriff's deputies say they followed Darrell Wayne Morton, 41, all the way to Sarasota County after he stole a minivan from a Brandon convenience store. But he ultimately surrendered in a most ideal place: a Hillsborough County jail parking lot.

Morton stole the van at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday Falkenburg Road, investigators said. A helicopter and several patrol deputies followed Morton along Interstate 75 through Manatee and into Sarasota County, driving slowly and keeping a mile's distance.

They followed when he headed back to Hillsborough. They could hardly believe it when he pulled into the Orient Road jail, parked, got out and surrendered. He is charged with grand theft auto and fleeing and eluding. It's not the first time: In 1997, he got two years probation for a grand theft in Hillsborough.
