Kids to bring in new year again

SEMINOLE - A Freaky Fridays Kids Night Out sponsored by the Seminole Recreation Department will be held Friday for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The event, Seminole's Rockin' New Year version of Dick Clark (DJ Phil), will ring in the new year all over again with party favors and music, TRL (Total Request Live) style.

Future Freaky Fridays will be held: Feb. 3, Super Bowl Frenzy; March 3, Gold Rush; April 7, April Antics; and May 5, Poolside Picnic. For information, call 391-8345.

The Seminole Community Library will hold a series of Family Movies at 2 p.m. on Saturdays in January: Jan. 7, The Jungle Book; Jan. 21, The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh; and Jan. 28, Snow Day.

Classic Movie Matinees are held at 2 p.m. on Thursdays: Jan. 5, In the Heat of the Night; Jan. 12, Vice Versa; Jan. 19, The Big Sleep; and Jan. 26, Brannigan. The water level in Lake Seminole is being lowered to allow work to begin on habitat restoration, boat ramp improvements, construction and installation of bypass canal treatment and pumping systems, and stormwater improvements.

The project is expected to take about three months to complete.

Registration is open for the fourth annual Youth Basketball season at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N, for boys and girls born in 1991 to 1996. Youth Basketball season will run from February through May. Registration fee is $70 per child.

A noncompetitive instruction basketball program for children born in 1997-1998 is also available at a cost of $40 per child. A recreation membership card is required for both programs.

The basketball program is also looking for volunteer basketball coaches with past playing experience and/or a working knowledge of the sport. Parents will be given a discount on the registration fee if they are selected as a team coach.

The Country Snowbirds band performs from 1 to 4 p.m at Seminole City Park on Fridays until April. The band has been entertaining people for 11 years, playing an open jam session hosted by Bernie Brown. Bring lawn chairs, singing voices and instruments. The park is at 7464 Ridge Road. The Seminole Recreation Department is sponsoring a trip for seniors to Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 22. Entertainment will include a variety of shows, including an ice skating extravaganza, ski show, pirate show, as well as the Oak Ridge Boys in concert.

Cost of the trip is $59 per person. Reservations and a recreation membership card are required. For more information, call Dan at 391-8345.
