Youth program being formed

ST. PETE BEACH - Youths between 12 and 16 years old who are city residents are invited to attend an introductory meeting for a new program sponsored by the city Recreation Department. The meeting is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Recreation Center gymnasium, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive. The program will include the selection of a teen council board, grant writing for equipment and participating in community projects. Activities will include fundraisers for field trips, dances and informative and fun classes. For more information, call 363-9244 or 224-4190.

The third annual St. Pete Beach Classic, as well as other competitive running and fitness walking, and the St. Petersburg General Hospital Health and Fitness Expo will be featured here Jan. 13-14. Events also include competitive runs, fitness walks and children's races. The expo begins noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 13 behind the St. Pete Beach Police Department and Recreation Center and includes free health screenings, health and fitness gear vendors, product samples and more. A beach party and bonfire will be at 7 p.m. behind the TradeWinds Resort. On Jan. 14, the expo will be open from 6 a.m. until noon. The St. Pete Beach Classic, a 10K run beginning at 7:45 a.m., is certified and insured by USA Track and Field. Other races will begin at 8:15 a.m. The Cody's Original Roadhouse Post Race Party free to all participants; $5 for adults and $3 for children will open at 9 a.m. and include live music, food, beverages, gift certificates and prizes. Belleair Beach

Gulfport

Florida Art Village Courtyard Fresh Market is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. Market items include fresh produce, natural products, flowers, live plants, baked goods and seafood. Indian Rocks Beach

The Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society Members Show at the Beach Art Center begins with a reception from 5:30 through 7:30 p.m. Friday. The exhibition will hang until Jan. 28. Admission is free. The city seeks residents to serve on the new Felony Nuisance Abatement Board, where property owners can be held responsible for repeated violations within a six-month period. This citizen board imposes fines and other noncriminal penalties to force property owners to ensure that their property is not used for unlawful possession of illegal drugs; prostitution or related activities; sale, manufacture or cultivation of illegal drugs; criminal street gang activities; or dealing in stolen property. Any resident or property owner can file a complaint to the board. Indian Shores

Women's Club Bingo will start Monday and continue every Monday night through March at the Indian Shores Town Hall auditorium, 19305 Gulf Blvd. Early birds starts at 7 p.m., and regular bingo starts at 7:30 p.m. No one under 18 is allowed in the hall. For more information, call Jane at 501-0614.

Madeira Beach

Treasure Island

Beach parking permits for 2006 are now available for purchase. Proof of residency is required. The permits, which cost $5 and are valid through Dec. 31, can be used at all city of Treasure Island metered parking lots except the Snowy Egret lot on the east side of W Gulf Boulevard at 80th Avenue, across from the Beach Pavilion. The permits are not valid at the city of St. Petersburg's lot at Gulf Boulevard and 112th Avenue. The 2005 permits are valid through Feb. 28. For more information, call 547-4575.

The Seventh Annual Rotary Tennis and Golf Challenge, jointly sponsored by the Gulf Beaches Rotary Club and the city of Treasure Island, will be held Jan. 28 at Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis, 10315 Paradise Blvd. The Tennis Challenge, a men's and women's doubles round robin, will accommodate 48 tennis players of all playing levels and abilities. The Golf Challenge, limited to 36 men and women, will be a shotgun start under the Callaway scoring system. The event will benefit the Treasure Island Recreation Department children's programs, the Treasure Bay tennis and golf programs for juniors, and the Gulf Beaches Rotary Foundation. Playing times will be 9 a.m. to noon (open tee times beginning at 10:30 a.m. for additional players). The cost is $25 per player, including play, goodie bag, prizes and raffle. A silent auction is open to the public and will include tennis racquets, hotel and restaurant packages, and more. Food and beverage concessions will be available throughout the event. A silent auction preview, draw party and buffet will be held at Treasure Bay from 6 to 8 p.m., Jan. 27. The cost of the buffet is $15 per person. The deadline for reservations is Jan. 24. The Treasure Island Action Club will meet at 1:20 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Community Center. Donna Cutting, a national speaker, will offer a humor-filled presentation on dealing with stress - "Laugh! We're All In This Together." The club is open to anyone 55 and older who lives on Treasure Island at least 5 months of the year.
