Group will install eighth mural on Park Tower

DOWNTOWN - The world's largest poem debuts on the east side of the Park Tower office building Saturday.

The Outdoor Arts Foundation is installing its eighth mural, replacing the heart-shaped American flag that has been on the tower for the past 21/2 years.

The foundation teamed with Tampa poet laureate James Tokley, Davis Islands artist Eileen Goldenberg and Tampa Preparatory students to create the piece.

Tokley's poem, Leviathan, tells the tale of a majestic whale. Goldenberg used the piece to create an original painting featuring the words of the poem framed on a turquoise background. Fifty students then created small drawings that serve as the border.

The final product that will grace the tower is a vinyl reproduction measuring 45 by 63 feet. It will remain on the tower for about two years.

Tampa museum receives grant for outreach project

TAMPA - The Junior League of Tampa recently awarded the Tampa Museum of Art a $2,489 grant to further its outreach efforts in the museum's Artspace program. The award will provide additional resources in 2006 to establish permanent art stations at Metropolitan Ministries, Haven Poe Runaway Shelter and the Spring.

For more than seven years, the Artspace program has exposed at-risk youths to art exhibitions and museum activities in an effort to increase self-esteem and self-awareness.

The grant will expand the museum's outreach visits at each site and fund the purchase of art supplies and educational resources for the children.

Since the program's inception, the Tampa Museum of Art has served more than 4,000 area children and worked closely with several organizations, including the Children's Home, Joshua House and the Lake Magdalene Emergency Shelter.
