Tarpon man booked in pedestrian death

By CAMILLE C. SPENCER
Published January 6, 2006

Witnesses told Florida Highway Patrol troopers that a pickup truck may have been the first of five vehicles to hit Hans Uzzo of Holiday as he crossed U.S. 19 on Nov. 26.

"We followed up on leads that were given to us by the community," said FHP Trooper Larry Coggins Jr. Six weeks after Uzzo was killed, those tips led troopers to Michael Chaparro, 21, of Tarpon Springs, the owner of a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck. Troopers notified him that he was going to be charged.

Chaparro faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash with death after hitting Uzzo and driving off. He was booked Wednesday at the Pasco County Jail. His record includes charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault with a weapon, battery, criminal mischief and vehicle theft dating back to 1998 when he was a juvenile.

Family members were unsure where Uzzo was going when he crossed U.S. 19 near Westwood Drive and was hit by vehicles heading southbound.
