TAMPA - Tampa police officers were just looking for stolen cars when they went to Best Economy Inn in north Tampa, but they found two people - including a murder suspect - wanted on FBI warrants out of Georgia.
Officers Byron Hoskins and Rodney Rivera went to Best Economy Inn at 1701 E Busch Blvd. Thursday at 11:30 a.m. and did random auto tag checks of cars parked there. Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said it is not uncommon for officers to make such checks of cars parked in areas like motel parking lots.
The officers discovered that Shamekia McBride, 30, was wanted on a federal warrant for attempting to get medication with a forged prescription.
While inside her motel room, they found a man hiding in the shower, according to a police report. He initially gave a false name, but eventually identified himself as Tinos S. McBride, 20. The officers discovered he, too, was wanted on federal warrants. The Waycross, Ga., Police Department had accused him of fatally shooting a man on a Waycross street and fleeing.
"It was outstanding police work," Durkin said of officers Hoskins and Rivera.
The McBrides were transported to the Orient Road jail, where they are being held without bail.
