Tampa man fatally shot by tow truck driver

TAMPA - A tow truck driver fatally shot a Tampa man who became combative when he learned his car was being towed Sunday, authorities said.

Glen Rich died at St. Joseph's Hospital, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said.

About 5:30 a.m. Sunday, tow truck driver Donald Montanez, 44, picked up Rich's car near the Sugar Shack, a club on Hillsborough Avenue, deputies said.

When Rich, 30, came outside to get his car, he began fighting with Montanez, deputies said. Montanez shot Rich one time in the chest with a handgun.

After the shooting, two people took Rich, who lived at 2225 E 131st Ave., Apartment 1706, to a nearby convenience store and called 911. He was taken to St. Joseph's, deputies said, where he died that afternoon.

Montanez, owner of PPCI Inc. towing company at 11709 N 12th St., was not charged.

Deputies said they and the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office are investigating.

Runner collapses, dies after half-marathon

ORLANDO - A runner who participated in the Walt Disney World Half-Marathon collapsed after he crossed the finish line and died, authorities said Saturday.

William Kane collapsed Saturday morning and was taken to Celebration Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said hospital spokesman Gary Conduff.

Kane, 43, of Arizona finished the race in 2:27:36, while the winner, Josh Eberly of Michigan, finished in 1:08:12, th e Orlando Sentinel reported.

Walt Disney World spokeswoman Kim Purty confirmed that a man collapsed after crossing the finish line and that he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

An autopsy will be performed, said Cpl. Carlos Torres, an Orange County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Police car hits, kills pedestrian in Broward

MARGATE - A man was killed when a Margate police officer, responding to a 911 call, hit him with his patrol car Sunday, police said.

Alan Thomas Byrne, 65, of Margate was crossing six-lane State Road 7 at about 2 a.m. on Sunday when he was struck by a patrol car driven by Officer Roman Fayer, 25, Margate police said in a statement.

Byrne was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fayer was responding to a 911 call about a motorist driving erratically on SR 7, police said.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office was called to investigate the incident.
