Creative fun back in school with pals

Courtney Poekert, 7, looks for more of the right color beads as she works on patterned star ornaments in the PLACE program at Fox Hollow Elementary School in Port Richey last week during winter vacation.

Finding the right color bead was a tedious task for Nicole Pimentel, 8, and Courtney Poekert, 7, who were making patterned star ornaments during their arts and crafts time. Seems purple was in high demand.

The two were sharing a table and some fun conversation in the Fox Hollow Elementary cafeteria with Brittany Bammann, 8, and Shawna Lovely, 10, who were busy making potholders.

"I'm going to give it to someone - my uncle's girlfriend. She loves to cook," said Shawna of her red, white and green creation.

Winter break was turning out to be pretty good - even if it meant coming to school where the PLACE program is housed.

"It's actually fun," said Brittany, adding that some of her off time was being spent working on her science project, which would be due soon after school resumed.

"I don't want to go back to school. Math hurts my brain," Shawna said with a sigh. "You're using your brain. It's like - oh, my gosh, it's going to explode."

"That's what I like about these days. No school, but you get to see your friends."
