Going gloriously to the dogs

The dogs are coming to town again this weekend. For the second year, the city is host to the AKC/Eukanuba National Championships, with more than 2,600 pedigreed pooches from around the world competing for $225,000 in prizes.

The rest of the world can watch them at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel.

Locals can see them in person all day Saturday and Sunday at the Tampa Convention Center, 333 S Franklin St. Conformation, obedience and agility contests are from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both days, and the AKC Meet the Breeds is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Admission is free with the purchase of a ticket for the evening shows, which take place a few blocks away at the St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive. The championships begin at 7:30 Saturday and Sunday night at the Times Forum.
