  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Townsend City Homes

By MICAHEL CANNING
Published January 13, 2006

LOCATION: East side of Manhattan Avenue, one block north of Gandy Boulevard

DEVELOPER: High Point Development

DESCRIPTION: Four buildings containing a total of 15 three-story townhomes. All units have 1,795 square feet and three bedrooms with 31/2 bathrooms.

PRICE: Townsend City Homes sold out in July for prices ranging from $250,000 to $300,000. Listing agent Jack King said one or two units will probably go up for resale soon.

ARCHITECT: John Saldana of Rojo Architecture in Tampa

AMENITIES: Hardwood floors; granite counter tops and optional stainless steel appliances in the kitchen; high ceilings; ground-floor bedroom with full bathroom and closet; two-car garage; private balcony; garden tubs in master bathrooms.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Townsend's light gray and sea foam green color scheme will work hand-in-hand with the architecture, Saldana said. "We're trying to break up the building, making it more interesting," he said. "With the color, it's an inexpensive way to do it." He added that the project's square geometry and projecting cubical window modules place the architecture in the broad style of contemporary.

TIMELINE: Construction should start April 1 and last eight months.

MOVE-IN DATE: December FOR INFORMATION: Call Jack King at Rick Wolfe & Associates, 600-4600, or go to www.townsendcityhomes.com
