TOWN 'N COUNTRY - Getting a college degree in everything from criminal justice to nursing is about to get more convenient for students living in northwest Hillsborough.

A university is opening a campus on Independence Parkway near the Veterans Expressway.

"We're here for busy, working adults," said Jeff Cross, campus director for the University of Phoenix. "Our goal is to provide access to people who work full time or have other responsibilities such as raising children."

The University of Phoenix is an accredited college that was started 30 years ago in Phoenix, Ariz.

It has been in the Tampa Bay area for seven years with campuses in Temple Terrace and Clearwater.

The school's newest location is a 17,000-square-foot campus at 4805 W Independence Parkway. The school will open another campus in Sarasota in March.

More than a dozen degrees will be offered at the Town 'N Country campus, where students will study in a state-of-the-art building.

Bachelor's and master's degrees will be offered in fields including computer technology, nursing, business management, criminal justice and education. Classes start Jan. 25.

Classes will be held on weeknights and Saturdays at the new site, which has nine classrooms, a student resource center and administrative staff and counselors. Online classes also will be offered.

Instructors hold master's degrees or doctorates and have an average of 16 years' experience in their fields of expertise, according to the university. Each instructor teaches about six courses per year.

"The thrust of our job is to see our students graduate," Cross said. "It's a regular academic program, not easy, but a fun process, a challenge."

Tuition ranges from $325 to $339 per credit for undergraduate courses; $380 to $396 for graduate classes.

Active-duty military personnel are offered a 10 percent discount.

Registration will remain open until classes meet their cap of roughly 15 students.
