From mailbox to trash can
Has the new year "get-organized" bug bitten you? Take note of this statistic: The average American spends eight months of his or her life going through direct mail, says Peter Walsh, the professional organizer featured on the TLC series Clean Sweep. He suggests depositing unwanted mail in the wastebasket as soon as it arrives. To keep books and magazines under control, try this: For every four books you keep, discard or give away one. Keep only the books you have the shelf space for. Keep only the last two issues of any magazine. When a third arrives, throw out the oldest.
Inspiration point
Show house season begins next weekend. Two 1920s homes on St. Armand's Key, Sarasota, will be furnished and decorated as the ASID Designer Showhouse, presented by the Florida West Coast Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. The homes, at 47 and 76 S Washington Drive, are open from Jan. 22 through Feb. 19. Hours: noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Tickets: $20 at the door. For information and tickets, call (941) 926-7794.
Anything you want, they got it
Today and Sunday, check out the Clearwater Home Show at the Harborview Center, 300 Cleveland St., downtown Clearwater. Featured will be dozens of exhibitors of home products and services, everything from roofs and skylights to hurricane shutters to carpet and tile. Admission: $1. Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Local home featured on HGTV
A historic St. Petersburg home in the Old Northeast neighborhood is being featured on the HGTV show Generation Renovation Sunday at 6:30 p.m. In addition to the home's remodeling, a two-story addition was made that includes a master bath, exercise room, family room, artist studio and office. And the kitchen redesign is reminiscent of art deco diners. The waterfront home at 2430 Coffee Pot Blvd. NE was originally built in 1926. Its current remodeling and construction was by Terry G. Perkins Design Build Remodelers of Madeira Beach. If you miss it Sunday, catch it again at 6 p.m. Feb. 15.
The year of the hybrid car
Okay, one last "what's hot/what's not" list for 2006, from the Detroit News: On the hot side: Asian accents, animal themes, knitting, framed black-and-white photos, hybrid cars. Not: American country accents, insects, cross-stitch, botanical prints, gas guzzlers. Hello, crystal chandeliers and citrus colors; goodbye, wrought iron and powder-blue/brown color schemes. Bring on the teak outdoor furniture; get rid of the resin.
