NEW PORT RICHEY - A traffic stop that began in Clearwater ended in New Port Richey when a man fled his vehicle and hid in a chimney, officials said.
Jonathan H. Bonney, 19, was pulled over early Friday at Jurgens Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Clearwater, a report said.
Bonney pulled the vehicle over while an officer from Clearwater Police Department got out of his cruiser from the passenger side, the report said.
Bonney then put his vehicle in reverse and tried to run the officer over. The officer and police cruiser were struck by Bonney's vehicle as Bonney drove off, the report said. That's when the chase began.
"(Clearwater police) radioed ahead, and we got in the pursuit of a Red Pontiac that struck a police officer," said Kevin Doll, spokesman for the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. "We went to the area of Ridge Road and Sycamore Drive."
That's where police dogs found Bonney hiding in a chimney at 8405 Sycamore Drive, the report said. Deputies seized $935 cash from him, Doll said.
Bonney was charged by Clearwater police with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and with loitering and prowling by the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.
He is being held in lieu of $20,500 bail at the Land O'Lakes Detention Center.
