Hurricane zoning could save park

A revised county report has recommended that a developer's proposal to raze the Golden Lantern Mobile Home Park be turned down.

The park, 7950 Park Blvd., is in a Level A hurricane evacuation area and, as such, county rules prevent anyone from increasing the number of residences on the land, wrote David Healey, executive director of the Pinellas Planning Council. The PPC is an advisory board to the County Commission, which will make the ultimate decision whether to change the land use to allow the development to go ahead.

A developer wants to raze the 178 mobile homes at the park to create 333 apartments and condominiums on 17.74 acres of the 19.7-acre parcel. The other two acres would be used for a small commercial/retail center.

This month, Healey urged the PPC to turn down the commercial portion of the proposal, making the entire project residential. His suggestion was spurned Monday by a countywide group of planners who thought the developer's proposal should be granted.

Both Healey's and the planners' reports were scheduled to be considered by the PPC on Wednesday.

But after studying the ramifications of the hurricane maps that show the Golden Lantern is in an A evacuation zone, Healey changed his report. He is now recommending the proposal be scrapped.
