Forward thinking
An entirely subjective look at the week ahead

VOICE OF REASON
Events all over the Tampa Bay area will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day today and throughout the week. Notable among them is an appearance by Archbishop Desmond Tutu at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize winner retired as archbishop of Cape Town a decade ago but remains tireless in his pursuit of human rights. The topic of his free talk is "No Future Without Forgiveness."
MADAME PRESIDENT
Today in Liberia, the inauguration of Ellen Johson-Sirleaf will make her the first woman president elected by an African nation. First lady Laura Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be on hand (guess all the guys were busy). Three other African nations have female vice presidents; maybe Laura and Condi can bring the idea back home.
NOT EXACTLY STARDUST
NASA's first mission to Pluto is scheduled for takeoff from Cape Canaveral as early as Tuesday, depending on weather. The probe is controversial because its camera and transmitters are powered by 24 pounds of radioactive plutonium. A test version of its rocket's fuel tank blew up, and an explosion on liftoff could scatter cancer-causing radioactive particles over a wide area. Sixteen teams of radiation specialists are deployed in Brevard County for the launch.
OSCAR ORACLE
Golden Globe awards will be handed out tonight at 8 on NBC to film and television winners. We're bummed and confounded that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association didn't nominate Chandra Wilson, the indomitable Dr. Miranda "the Nazi" Bailey of Grey's Anatomy, but, on the upside, we're thrilled to at last see an awards show that doesn't involve Everybody Loves Raymond (they don't).
DIVA DAYS
Three of the most distinctive voices in American music celebrate birthdays this week. Opera's grande dame Marilyn Horne is 72 today. On Tuesday, still-slinky jazz diva Eartha Kitt turns 79. And country wildflower Dolly Parton will be 60 on Thursday.
