Budget woes delay building of new elementary school

RIVERVIEW - A new elementary school originally scheduled to open this fall has been delayed because of budget concerns, a Hillsborough district spokesman said Monday.

Stephen Hegarty said a construction bid for Summerfield Crossings Elementary School, near Big Bend Road and U.S. 301, came in $1.7-million over budget. The school's construction management company, Mathews Construction, projected it would cost $11.48-million to build the school that district administrators estimated should cost $9.7-million.

Educators have asked the school's architect, Rowe, to redesign the campus, which is inside the Summerfield Crossings subdivision.

The earliest the school will open is January 2007 and as late as August 2007, Hegarty said.

The 956-student capacity school is being built to relieve Collins and Summerfield elementary schools. Students will remain at those schools until Summerfield Crossings opens.

Last fall, Collins Elementary School in Riverview opened in portables while waiting for construction to end on the campus' permanent site. Hegarty said children will be transferred to the new school buildings in spring.
